MANLEY FOR CONGRESS
--connections with other grassroots and credible movements--

If you have 26 minutes to spare, and a good internet connection, please see this video stream of Tom Hayden in conversation with Naomi Klein:
http://bravenewfilms.org/watch/25472577/43103?utm_source=rgemail

Hayden is, of course, the legendary activist who was a member of the Chicago 7 and who also spent 18 years in the California Legislature. Klein is the author of two best-selling books, the anti-globalization manifesto No Logo, and the recent hit, The Shock Doctrine.

After you've watched the video (directed & produced by Robert Greenwald, info@bravenewfoundation.org) ask yourself why this group "Tulsans for Democracy" is not endorsing Mark Manley for OK1.

Mark Manley supports:

An immediate end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq.

Impeachment and/or prosecution of any member, or past member, of the current administration or Congress who knowingly lied to the American people about the threat of Saddam Hussein and the country of Iraq.

A repeal of the Patriot Act.

A repeal of the Military Commissions Act which suspends rights to a speedy trial, rules out the use of the Geneva Conventions as a source of rights, and denies the right of habeas corpus.

An end to torture.

Public financing of campaigns and public control of all media.

Not-for-profit universal health care for all citizens.

Publicly-supported education through a four-year college.

An aggressive national policy on global warming.

Ending the appeal of outsourcing by revisiting NAFTA and WTO and requiring all companies importing goods to the U.S. to pay wages comparable to living standards in our country and to support international environmental standards.

Ending oil dependence through investment in renewable energy resources.

To endorse anyone else but Manley would be for this group to betray its founding statement. The reason why I joined.

Manley is also a candidate coming from the grassroots, not someone parachuted into the contest for OK1, because of promises to spend a personal fortune on the campaign. Last I looked this group isn't called "Tulsans for Plutocracy".

"Deserving vote"
7/18/2008

The 2006 elections brought new Democratic faces to Congress, but not enough Democratic spine to put the U.S. Constitution on the table. It is time for Oklahoma to contribute some backbone.

In 2008, Oklahoma's 1st District can and should get rid of our sorry Republican representative and elect a Democratic congressman who will demand accountability to the Constitution and to the interests of the people. We have had enough resolutions, laws and regulations that encourage greed, subsidize dirty energy, allow warrantless spying on Americans, and fund continuation of a war we don't want. The latest war funding vote for another $165 billion was an appalling move to hock the future of our children.

In the Democratic primary of July 29 we will be able to vote for grassroots candidate Mark Manley whose priorities are to address the real needs of common people. For example, Manley will approach the health-care issue — an issue particularly critical in Oklahoma — from a citizen's perspective, rejecting Washington's swarming, self-serving lobbyists who subvert good legislation.

Manley's candidacy represents an admirable commitment to civic duty, and he deserves our vote.

Peace candidate wins 44% in OK1

Manley, the anti-war pro-peace candidate, did very respectably in yesterday's election, winning 44% of the vote.

Plus, we had the satisfaction --on a budget of only $2000, all of it clean money devoid of PACs corporations or interest groups-- of driving the conservative democrat (running on god-only-knows what policy positions) into debt to the tune of $37,000. (Best estimate, by the Manley campaign manager about the Oliver budget. The Oliver budget went into the RED, somewhat irresponsibly.)

As expected by his campaigners, the pro-impeachment candidate succeeded in firing up the base of the party to come out and vote for him.

For Manley to have come within spitting distance of the other contender bodes well for future candidates running on a similar platform of peace, universal healthcare, and anti-corporatism.

The limited budget and complete avoidance of mass media radio/TV spots by the Manley campaign also suggests that candidates of lesser means can still be competitive, and that at minimum, a grassroots & netroots campaign can drive the other candidate into debt, by running a candidate who actually reflects the values of the party's electorate, in populist fashion, running as a progressive candidate on policy planks that actually matter to the average citizen.

Oliver is welcome to borrow as many planks as she wants from Manley's platform, in order to reflect the 44% of the Oklahoma 1st District Democrats who agree with Manley's policy positions. If this race succeeds in persuading the nominee to move to the Left in her policy positions, it will have been worth the effort.

Further details:

Oliver is estimated to have gone $37,000 in debt to win 11,115 votes, or a output of 0.3 votes per dollar spent (= victory at a cost of approx. $3.33 per vote)

Manley is estimated to have spent $2,000 total, without any debt load, to win 8,841 votes, or an output of 4.4 votes per dollar spent ( = to win second place at a cost of approx. $ 0.23 per vote)

Being progressive is cost efficient.

Updated figures and updated calculations

According to this NewsOK.com story Oliver spent $66,000 of her own money in the last few weeks.
http://newsok.com/boren-sullivan-win-easily-democrats-pick-2-challe...
Add to that Opensecrets.org counts up to July 9 she spent $8,364 of donations totaling $20,715.
http://www.opensecrets.org/races/summary.php?cycle=2008&id=OK01
equals $74,364

Manley claims he spent "something under $3,000."

Oliver is estimated to have gone $37,000 in debt and to have spent $74,364 in the last few weeks of the campaign to win 11,115 votes, or a output of 0.15 votes per dollar spent (= victory at a cost of approx. $6.69 per vote)

Manley is now estimated to have spent $3,000 total, without any debt load, to win 8,841 votes, or an output of 3 votes per dollar spent ( = to win second place at a cost of approx. $ 0.34 per vote)

Being progressive is cost efficient.
